What we will do

Wayne worked with the Puhoi community to secure the Puhoi River Park - across the Puhoi River. This special local landscape would otherwise have become a housing development that would have spoiled the 'face' of Puhoi. Wayne has helped communities throughout the North Shore and Rodney.

Pakiri is a special place; a jewel in Auckland's crown. Wayne and John have stood up on Council for special places like Pakiri, Te Arai, Puhoi, Weiti, Okura and Muriwai and many coastal communities like Jamiesons Bay - to make sure these icons are protected. Their commitment and concern goes far beyond their own area.

The North Harbour Stadium is the best place for a swimming pool for Albany. The location is convenient, there is parking, it is economical and public. The stadium area can become a hub for events, entertainment and sport with its excellent public transport connections.

It is important that the Regional Parks like Long Bay are given the special attention they deserve - not simply lumped in with smaller local reserves. We support the retention of the Regional Parks Network and intiatives like the Shakespear Open Sanctuary pest proof fence and the work of the Great Park Society to extend Long Bay Regional Park.

Liquor bans are an important tool for police to keep communities safe. Wayne and John pushed for the extension of liquor bans to local beaches like Stanmore Bay, Manly, Arkles, Red Beach and Orewa. They have proved very effective with widespread support from residents.

Our beaches are among our most important assets. They are the jewels in the crown of the North Shore and Hibiscus Coast. At Little Manly Wayne led a successful campaign that saved the beach from an unsightly development right on the beachfront among the coastal pohutukawas.

Ferry services are an important part of the public transport network. Wayne was active in the 'Save the Ferry' campaign and the Gulf Harbour Ferry is secure and expanding. We support a ferry service to Browns Bay and Takapuna together with an expanded service to the Upper Harbour.

Albany needs a new library and the sensible place is at the new Albany Centre by the shopping mall. Albany also needs community facilities such as a new and expanded community centre to cater for the huge population increases in this busy area. Currently Wayne is working as part of a community steering group to set up a Community Garden in Albany. Wayne also helped initiate the plant nursery at Paremoremo Prison to provide training and a valuable outcome used by organisations like DoC.

Wayne led the successful campaign as Chairman of Guardians of the Coast to stop the largest rubbish tip in New Zealand on the coast by Okura. The legal challenge helped kick-start recycling on the North Shore. Wayne and John will push for collection of organics for recycling and ongoing Zero Waste initiatives.

Wayne and John voted consistently against the more than $20 million dollars spent on extensions to the Rodney District Council when it was clear the 'Super City' was likely. We suggested temporary accommodation that could be shifted and sold off later - but were out-voted. It is critical Council extravagance stops to keep a lid on rate increases that are unaffordable.

The Golf Course at Gulf Harbour is now protected by covenant and zoning restrictions to prevent housing development (which would likely have happened when Blue Chip collapsed); Wayne and John pushed hard in Council to make this happen.

Manly Beachfront
Wayne and John worked with local beachfront and other residents to successfully relocate the new main sewage pipeline away from the beachfront and along Lawrence Street - a cheaper and more environmentally friendly option.

The Busway has been a great success. Wayne was Council representative on the Busway committee over three terms of Council. Wayne and John have pushed for Park & Ride at Silverdale to improve the Hibiscus Coast service and take pressure off the Oteha Park & Ride station - which requires additional parking. They back a sensible approach to policing busway and 'T' lanes on the Shore and throughout the Auckland Council area.

Cyclists are an important part of the public transport network. We support cycle & ride facilities to tie in with the busway and off-road cycleways where possible plus a cycleway & walkway across the Harbour Bridge. We advocate strongly for travel planning for schools and businesses.

Stormwater discharges wash away sand and pollute the sea. We will continue the Project CARE programme underway on the North Shore and extend it to the Hibiscus Coast - to help clean up our beaches and improve beach water quality. We also support the clean-up of local streams like Stanmore Bay, Lucas Creek and the Browns Bay stream.

High rises have their place but need to be located where they are well supported by public transport, fit according to city-wide planning and there are not telling shading, wind and aesthetic effects. The Nautilus fails on all counts and it leaks badly - with a claim against Council for more than $20 million. High-rise is also unsuited to Manly. We also support protection of Auckland's volvanic cones and view corridors from high-rise.

The Hammerhead at Gulf Harbour is now safe from the 4-storey apartment development that was so close to happening - with the community's support Wayne and John mounted a successful challenge that saved it from the brink. Now it can continue to be used for boat launching, the ferry terminal and recreation. We will push for the completion of a breakwater for safe boat launching. The boat in the background is 'Hibiscus Rescue 1' - a rescue craft from Coastguard Hibiscus that runs from the Hammerhead.

Wayne and John worked with Arkles Bay residents to successfully have a bylaw on set netting in Arkles Bay - making the beach safe for swimming, boaties and dolphins.
